The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival has multiple explanations. The most famous story in modern China is that during the Warring States period, the festival commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a poet of Chu. Qu Yuan was a member of the cabinet of the King of Chu and served in the senior government office. He was a popular and respected official but was neglected by the emperor in the imperial court because of a jealous official. However, when the king decided to ally with the increasingly powerful state of Qin, Qu was banished for opposing the alliance and even accused of treason.
