The painting Guernica is a masterpiece created by the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso in 1937. This giant oil painting, with a length of 7.76 meters and a width of 3.49 meters, is now housed in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain.
The inspiration for Guernica originated from the inhumane air raid carried out by Nazi Germany on the Spanish town of Guernica. Through abstract depictions of various elements such as cows, horses, light bulbs, mothers and children, the painting reflects the brutality of the fascist forces and the suffering of the people. It expresses Picasso's hatred and anger towards war and the atrocities of Nazi Germany, as well as his deep sympathy for the Spanish people in distress and his longing for a bright and peaceful future.
The entire painting adopts a black, white and gray color scheme, highlighting the oppressive and depressing theme. The composition is chaotic yet orderly. The triangular composition not only provides stability but also conveys a sense of sharpness, cleverly dividing the picture while creating an atmosphere of sorrow and pain.
Picasso used the unique expression form of Cubism to create Guernica. He initiated the concept of dynamic perspective, observing objects from multiple angles and completely discarding the traditional unified form and shading of natural objects. A replica of Guernica is erected in the conference center of the United Nations building, serving as a reminder to people all over the world to cherish peace and prevent the recurrence of anti-humanitarian wars.
